What are Big Dots?

"Big Dots" is a fabric line designed by Mary Lou. Each fabric in this line contains 5" dots printed onto a background.

Sample Big Dot Fabric

What is the purpose of a fabric with 5" dots on it?

To simulate curved piecing, using only straight seams.

How to cut big dots

1. You cut the fabric into squares so that the dots are centered on the squares.

2. Then you cut each dot into quarters to get 'quarter dots'.

Cutting Quarter Dots

3. Each quarter dot is a square of fabric. Now the playing begins!

4. When you sew them together, it will look as though you have many curved seams, but really you are just sewing together squares.

5. When you mix your own fabric into the block you can do even more.

Sewing another block using Big Dots and other fabric.
