Hoochy Mama Fun Quilt - Supply List

Sewing supplies

  • Fabric scissors
  • Neutral thread
  • Straight pins
  • Anything YOU need to sew with
  • Masking tape and small bag for garbage
  • Pencil and note paper
  • Rotary cutter & mat
  • Ruler – Mary Lou’s favorite is an OmniGrid® square 9 ½” x 9 ½” or 12 ½” x 12 ½”
Optional (for individual cutting units Mary Lou uses 3 ½” x 3 ½”)

Fabrics

  • 1 ½ yards tone on tone background fabric – light in value OR black – no mediums – NOTE – if you are brave you can select 3 different fabrics as long as they are the same color and the same value.
  • A good variety of 1/3 yard cuts – at least 6 – the more the better - Mary Lou likes to mix stripes, polka dots, graphics, theme prints, plaids, etc. See Mary Lou’s books for hints on fabric stashes for great quilts.
  • OR you may bring instead a variety of 4” x 45” strips in no more than 3 or 4 color families for a more scrappy quilt

Pre-Cutting Instructions

  1. Cut at least 24 -THREE AND ONE HALF inch squares from your background fabric. DO NOT cut up all your background fabric, but be sure and bring the rest of it with you.
  2. Cut 3 OR 4 OF your FUN COLORED fabrics into 4” by the width of the fabric
Since we are in a shop and packing is an issue, I would suggest cutting your BACKGROUND fabrics beforehand.

If you are unsure of your fabric choices, wait and Mary Lou will discuss this at the beginning of the class.
