Lectures offered

"Quilted Memories and Celebrating YOUR life" Lecture covers ideas of going back and considering how your life is different from other people's lives. What is important to say in a quilt and what will people know about you in years to come from your quilts? Lots of inspiration and lots of exciting colors and ideas. "Creative YOU"
Lecture covers all kinds of ways to become more creative. Mary Lou explains avenues of creativity, the personality of the creative person and how you can stretch and become more creative with you thoughts and your quilts. Prepare to be inspired and to go away thinking of things you want to do to be a new "creative YOU."

I only offer classes via local guilds or national quilt seminars. I can be reached at MaryLouQuilts@aol.com to discuss my teaching schedule if you would like to offer one of these classes at your guild.

Workshop List

Plaid to Meet You
Plaids make great story quilts! They create texture and warmth in their very nature. We will study how plaids work with each other, what makes a plaid that works well with others and what makes another plaid best left out of a quilt. We will make a background first and then add wonderful figures in the middle that tell a nice little story that has to do with YOU. See how wonderful plaids look pieced and appliqued into a quilt with one another. Once you start collecting plaid you will learn that you can never have enough and this is a wonderful way to use them. Kids and adults alike love these quilts!
  • Length: 2-5 days
  • Skill level: beginner with applique skills
Here a Chick, There a Chick...
Participants will receive a pattern but are encouraged to do an original background (with guidance). Fun figures are added to make a sensational and original wall quilt. This class is for the young at heart! Class is easy going, fun and whimsical.

All of my workshops are two days or longer as the storytelling, personalized, and unique nature of the quilts produced in each class requires more time.

Color Confused to Color Confident
This class starts with color theory, discusses fabric personalities and how to select what works best in different quilts. Class works on a quilt with simple blocks while seeing how and why some colors will work with each other and some won't. I have excellent response from this class!

Everyday Angels
This class centers around the subject of angels. I often ask, "If someone in your life was an angel in disguise who would they be?" We all have angels in our lives from the lady next door who tends her garden, to the nice lady in the bakery, the man who stopped to help change your tire, your grandchild, a favorite kitty, your mother, an aunt or best friend. We will explore composition, color, drawing and things that can make a great supporting cast to your angels. This class always brings smiles!
  • Length: 2 days
  • Skill level: beginner with applique skills
I also teach brief lessons on drawing and some basic knowledge on how to buy fabric and what your stash may be missing. "Your Story in Quilts" is the recurring theme in each class.

Container Quilts
Baskets and containers for flowers and fun things are discussed and designed in this class. These make wonderful wallhangings for living rooms and bedrooms and also make fabulous gifts for those that love flowers and folk. Victorian style lovers can do great things inthis class too.
  • Length: 2 days
  • Skill level: beginner with applique skills

Story Quilts: Telling a Tale with Fun and Folk Art
(a process class)
Having done hundreds of quilts in a folk art style this is my favorite and the most popular workshop I teach. This workshop begins with borders and new ways to piece interesting blocks you have not tried before. Class discusses color, composition, and design and works to incorporate borders into the story. The quilts in this class are exciting and fun and tell a story of the quilt maker. What will people know about you in 80 years from the quilts you sew? This class answers that question. I use my background in art to teach quilters things they may not know to make their quilts come alive in a wonderful way. I offer this class in a two, three, four, or five day workshop. This class (as with most of my classes) cannot be taught in one day. Prepare to come and learn lots!
  • Length: 2, 3, 4, or 5 days
  • Skill level: beginner with applique skills
A Few Of My Favorite Things
Class discovers how to put favorite hobbies and collections into fun and lively quilts for home display. Fabric representations and color choices are covered as well as setting. Works well in making gift quilts for children, other loved ones or friends who have their favorite things. Ideas for simple shapes and memory ideas are covered as well. A fun sentimental class.
  • Length: 2 days
  • Skill level: beginner with applique skills
